  • NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE 1978 Movie Review – Is It Worth Watching?

    What kind of animals am I going to see in this house? If there’s a horse, I think I’ll make a song about where it is! Dis Drawma Kingg decided to write this first paragraph before watching National Lampoon’s Animal House. Will it be good? Will it be awful? I am hesitant to review this movie, because my intuition suggests it will be a “supposed” comedy that does not age well. Let’s jump into the movie-viewing rabbit hole and find out the chrooth! 

    There totally was a horse! And it was the best character by far! Animal House largely suffers due to the fact that none of the main human characters are likable. They also don’t seem to have any funny lines. The closest I came to laughing was from a few of the visual gags. Perhaps John Landis was trying to make a statement about college life in the 1970s, who could say? I imagined John Belushi would be somewhat funny. Sadly, his character only amounted to someone that was constantly doing weird and/or gross things. Even simplistic entertainment seemed entirely absent from this film.

    OK enough about that meaningless movie I’m sure I’ll never watch again. Let’s talk about something positive! This is the first episode since drawmakingg.com became one year old! That’s right, July 5 2026 was the one-year anniversary of my original post to the domain! Now in my second year as a self published writer and website owner, this thing could go anywhere! There could be future episodes with a total of six good jokes! I mean it’s possible, I don’t know if it will happen. Thank you so much to everyone who has read an episode or more of the drawmakingg.com archives! I know you’re wondering if I have gotten any wiser after one year and almost 70 episodes. I still believe I qualify as the man with the lowest IQ in bipedal human history. No need to worry about my works of writing getting any smarter. I’d even give a guarantee, but I don’t charge people money to read my movie reviews or pictureless comic books. So I don’t really see what I would get out of having to guarantee anything.

    Is It Worth Watching?: Oh yeah, National Lampoon’s Animal House…no, I do not think it is worth watching at all. 

    Final Thoughts: 1/10 Crowns. I would probably give National Lampoon’s Animal House a fraction of a point (or maybe zero points) if it were not for the fact that Dis Drawma Kingg’s highly official Crown Rating System does not go below 1 point. 1 out of 10 is almost like saying zero on this scale though, so it all works out. Did people actually like this movie when it came out? I have seen plenty of movies from the 70s and earlier. There definitely were a lot of excellent films that already came out by this era. It’s not like society didn’t have anything good to compare to. Well anyway, I’m being a little more negative than I usually try to be. I just honestly didn’t like this movie at all. Although I go on plenty of tangents and make up non-sequitur stories in many episodes of this soap opera called Drawma Kingg, I am always honest about the number I give the Crown Rating and my actual opinion of each movie I review. I would not lie about those things, because I wish to maintain my integrity (assuming I have some) as a movie critic! Stay tuned for the next episode where I’ll probably be reviewing some random cinematic adaptation of a book (such as The Odyssey or Mother, I Finally Have The Mathematical Skills To Count The Number Of Legs I Possess) in an overly dramatic fashion! 

  • ADOLESCENCE OF UTENA 1999 Movie Review – Out Of Order Double Feature Part 2

    Adolescence Of Utena has probably got to be the best super obscure movie I’ve ever seen. I stand by this statement so strongly that this will be my first review where I take the whole movie critique seriously (instead of saying constantly absurd things). Also, I should mention that though it is true that I went to the theater the other night to watch this film, I have actually seen the movie multiple times already. Clicking “play” randomly, the Utena movie is something that I stumbled upon on a free streaming service, and I was never the same! It is one of the most bizarre avant-garde works of art an individual could encounter!

    I later went on to watch the Utena TV show, which actually precedes the movie. Evidently I watched them out of order. I always encourage people to watch the movie BEFORE the anime series, because watching it without context gives you an extra mysterious movie experience. I will try to avoid spoiling anything, but I will admit there are some extremely over-the-top things you have to accept in order to let yourself enjoy the film. You definitely have to open your mind before entering this world of dramatic duels amongst the roses. With all that out of the way, I’m telling you this is one of the greatest films in all of cinema!

    Impossible buildings, platforms, and structures are in abundance on the screen. Your eyes become immersed in a hazy dreamlike world of transforming school architecture. Epic music and imagery are present in virtually every moment of the film. Shadows narrate an increasingly strange story where the viewers have to put all the pieces together themselves. Ohtori Academy feels like Plato’s Cave (previously discussed in episode #10 – When Harry Met Sally Ending Explained). Surreal moving environments leave you unable to discern what is real and what is a lie. Ghosts wander the halls. Some characters can see them, while others are oblivious.

    Final Thoughts: 10/10 Crowns. Adolescence Of Utena is great on every level that I look for when it comes to greatness in movies. I want an interesting story. I want a powerful soundtrack. I want compelling characters and maybe a little mystery to some of them. If it’s animated, I want great art. I would put this film easily in my top three animated films ever made. Be mindful, there are mature themes, although many of them would probably go over anyone’s head on a first viewing. Cautiously, watch at your own discretion. Personally, I enjoy anime movies a little more than I enjoy anime TV shows. I am always excited to find an outstanding anime feature film, and this is one of the best ones I’ve ever randomly discovered!

  • SUPERGIRL 2026 Movie Review – Out Of Order Double Feature Part 1

    Any movie that starts out with a song by the band Sleigh Bells is probably going to be good, right? I like the character Supergirl way more than I like the character Superman, so I was hoping for a cool DC film. To be perfectly honest though, the Supergirl trailer left me with substantial doubts. I had to have faith in the SUPERHERO MOVIE CREATORS that this Kryptonian flick would be better than trailer assumptions!

    Anyway, before I get to answers to all those questions about the goods and bads of the movie, I should probably talk about something else for a little while. So like, you know how superhero movies are always about suiting up, wearing a costume, defeating bad guys, maybe some New York stuff (maybe not), facing problems the main character doesn’t feel like dealing with, and special effects? Usually at least one character is stronger than another. Also, I don’t think I have seen a single superhero movie without some kind of punch scene. EXPLAIN THAT in terms of originality in the world of art!

    Surely it may sound like I’m knocking down superhero movies, but I get a ticket to almost every one! It may even be fair to say I love superhero movies. Some are better than others, and perhaps I am a bit critical, because there are so many of them that come out that it’s easy to compare them to each other. However, I will say I am happy that we get so many comic book movies these days. Truthfully, I would like to always see that continue. I would also be happy to see more third-party publisher comic book properties get made into large budget productions. Dis Drawma Kingg wants to see big screen versions of The Incal or The Maxx more so than a 700th sequel about Thor. Although to be clear, if I could have both, I’ll still take that 700th Thor movie!

    OKAY, I’ll talk about Supergirl for a little bit. I definitely enjoyed the film as a sort of sci-fi space adventure. I appreciated the different planets and environments and types of aliens. The leading star did a great job! I didn’t have any problem with Milly Alcock being chosen for the main character. One of my major issues with the movie was the writing for Lobo. They did not do a successful job at making this character interesting. He literally serves absolutely no purpose to the plot of the movie as well. I don’t dislike Lobo or Jason Momoa as an actor. I felt the issue was more that they didn’t write him into the script in any kind of meaningful way, and I don’t remember Lobo getting any particularly good lines either.

    Final Thoughts: 7/10 Crowns. I mostly thought Supergirl was a good superhero movie. There was enough excitement to make it a fun night out at the theater. For me, the movie had a much stronger first half than the second. In conclusion, it would be fair to say that the SUPERHERO MOVIE CREATORS did manage to deliver on an enjoyable space opera-esque film. Next time a 700th comic book movie (most of these other than Supergirl being about some type of animal/insect person) comes to your local town, how can you not at least feel somewhat drawn to go see it?

  • PRETTY WOMAN 1990 Movie Review – Is It Worth Watching?

    What kind of title is Pretty Woman? Is the person who came up with it saying that it is unusual to be pretty? Is it saying that the writer thinks looks are someone’s most notable attribute? Well anyway, Julia Robert’s character (Vivian) turned out to have a nice personality in the narrative, so I think the movie should’ve been called Personality Woman, but they don’t let me write the titles of big Hollywood movies.

    Oh man if they DID let me write the titles of Hollywood movies what would I name them? Ant In A Trench Coat Pretending He’s A Human Leader Of A Sovereign Nation. Suddenly I realize that they would stop letting me write movie titles right after I came up with that one. I’m still gonna come up with some more just in case I ever need them later (which I know is merely a lie to myself). Oh here how about this one– READING A BOOK: THE MOVIE!  

    You can probably tell that I wasn’t impressed with the movie this week. It just seemed to focus on the guy’s wealth and the woman’s appearance. Richard Gere’s character (Edward) does go through a bit of an arc of becoming a better person, however I still found him to be mostly unlikable and incapable of fully changing in a matter of a few days. So anyway back to the made up movie titles.  GRABBING SOME DRIVE-THRU! That would be the comedy thriller of the year! It will be like a funny thing with like some friends in a van getting drive-thru or something, and like something crazy happens, and there are a lot of jokes, so it’s like a funny comedy, yet it’s like a thriller, because something crazy happens! Oops I wasn’t supposed to actually write a script or even a general plot. This little thread was supposed to be about what would happen if they hired me to write movie titles ONLY. If they would have hired me to write the titles of late 80’s action movies, I probably would’ve called one of them Live Hard, because Bruce Willis is still alive at the end of the movie.

    Is It Worth Watching?: Not really. I found it to be a – what’s the word…reasonably disappointing film overall.

    Final Thoughts: 4/10 Crowns. Pretty Woman was problematic for all of the reasons that you would imagine it might be problematic. The storyline really wasn’t quite the right message in so many directions. I don’t think this is just a matter of a movie that aged badly. I think that it was a weak perspective on power and wealth dynamics even in 1990. I really do enjoy many romantic comedy films. Unfortunately, this specific one was not well executed in my dramatic opinion. Now I’m gonna go either read a book or watch a movie. If only some Hollywood executive producers would finance my film, one day the world could do both at the same time!
